Reading a Shaft Spec Sheet Against Real Turf
Flex, kick point, and torque all shape how a shaft performs — but none of them mean much until you know how they behave on the ground you actually play, not a mat.
The Variable Most Fittings Skip Entirely
A mat never changes underfoot. Real turf does — firm Bermuda in an August dry spell behaves nothing like soft, overseeded turf after a January cold front. A shaft and sole combination that "tests great" on a forgiving mat can dig or bounce inconsistently once you put it on the actual ground you play.
We check every fitting against at least one firm lie and one soft lie before locking in bounce or sole width, so the recommendation survives contact with your real course, not just the bay.
A Starting Point, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex ratings aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. We treat flex and kick point as a starting range, then confirm both against how the club actually performs off your real turf, not the label alone.
Low Kick Point
Loads and releases energy earlier in the downswing — often preferred by players who want a higher launch off firm fairway turf.
Mid Kick Point
The most common starting point, and a reasonable default while we gather your own course card data.
High Kick Point
Releases energy later, closer to impact — frequently the better match on softer, overseeded turf where extra launch isn't needed.
Two More Variables Layered on Top of Turf
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load — lower torque tends to hold face angle more stable on firm, resistant turf, while higher torque can add feel on softer ground where the club doesn't have to fight the surface as hard.
Steel shafts feel firmer and more consistent shaft to shaft, a common choice for irons and wedges played on Gainesville's typically firm summer turf. Graphite is lighter and dampens vibration, standard in drivers and fairway woods.
