A club that plays fine off a level bay floor can still dig, bounce, or skid once it meets your actual course. Below, club by club, is what changes once we take the turf seriously.

Off the Tee, Wind Does Most of the Damage
Nothing exposes a bad number like a driver on a gusty afternoon. Because it's hit from open ground with the least protection from trees or elevation, the driver is where a still-air simulator reading drifts furthest from what actually happens at your course.
We take a wind reading at tee height and record it right next to your ball speed and spin numbers, then run every demo head against both sets of data together. A shaft that produces your tightest dispersion indoors sometimes isn't the one that holds up once real crosswind gets involved — and that's usually the more important number to chase.
Loft, total weight, and head MOI all get pulled into that same comparison. A center of gravity placement that flies beautifully in calm air can balloon or knuckle under load once wind enters the picture, so we'd rather find that out on the bench than on your first tee shot of the season.
Built to Survive Two Different Lies in One Round
A fairway wood has the hardest job in the bag: launch cleanly off a tee, then launch just as cleanly off whatever the fairway actually gives you a few holes later. Sole shape decides most of that outcome, and sole shape is exactly what a soft simulator mat can't test honestly.
Before we settle on anything, we drop the ball on a genuinely tight lie and watch how the leading edge behaves. A rounded, forgiving sole tends to survive contact on Gainesville's firmer summer turf; a sharper, more aggressive sole can dig unless your strike is already very consistent through impact. We'd rather learn which camp you're in before you buy the club than after.
Loft gets checked against your driver number from the same visit, so the two clubs don't quietly overlap in distance once both are dialed in.
Filling a Gap Most Long Irons Can't Cover
Long irons ask for cleaner turf contact than most golfers reliably deliver. Rather than fight that pattern, a properly built hybrid absorbs it — provided the head style actually matches how you approach the ball.
We test both an iron-shaped head, which tends to suit a steeper, digging strike, and a wood-shaped head, which tends to suit a shallower, sweeping one, and let your real contact on turf decide between them rather than guessing from feel alone. Shaft weight gets matched toward your iron set rather than your fairway woods, since that's usually the closer partner in how the club gets delivered.
We also check where the finished yardage lands relative to both neighbors in the bag, so the hybrid earns its slot instead of duplicating a distance you already own.
One Lie Angle Rarely Fits the Whole Set
Posture at address shifts as club length changes, which means a lie angle dialed in on a mid-iron can quietly go upright in the long irons and flat in the short ones. Most shops check the number once, on one club, and call the set done. We check both ends.
The check happens against real turf, not a lie board, because the sole's contact with actual ground is what tells the truth — a static reading at address can look perfect and still produce a toe-first or heel-first mark once you swing for real. We record the divot line from both a long iron and a short iron and compare them directly.
Shaft profile gets tuned the same way across the set, and total length gets checked against your carry gapping so no two irons are quietly fighting for the same yardage window.
Full Swings and Short Shots Rarely Agree
A wedge earns its keep on the shots where precision matters most, and those shots don't all come from the same length of swing. A full-swing approach and a forty-yard pitch can put completely different demands on the same sole, which is why bounce and grind can't be chosen from one swing alone.
We watch both: a full-effort wedge shot off your usual fairway turf, and a shorter, more delicate shot off a firmer, tighter lie near the green. Higher bounce tends to forgive the softer, fuller strike; lower bounce with more heel and toe relief tends to suit the tighter, more precise one. Most golfers need something in between, and the only way to find that middle point is to test both conditions directly.

A Different Kind of Ground Reading Entirely
Everything above is about turf firmness and wind. Putting is a different problem — it's about green speed and how much the face wants to twist open and closed as your stroke moves through it.
On our practice green, set to a speed close to what you'll actually play, we track how far the face rotates and how wide your stroke arcs on the way back. A stroke with real arc tends to want a putter with more toe hang to match that natural rotation; a stroke that stays square through the ball usually pairs better with a face-balanced head that resists twisting instead of encouraging it.
Length and lie both shift eye position and posture enough to change that rotation number, so we test in small increments rather than assuming a stock length is close enough.
